Obituary

Susan Elizabeth Garrett Dimon, age 91, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed into eternal rest on Friday, October 10, 2025, from complications of dementia.

Susan was born in Baldwinsville, New York, on April 6, 1934, to Harry James Garrett and Alice Waite Garrett. As a very young person, she was a gifted pianist and vocalist. She graduated from high school in Baldwinsville and received a Bachelor of Arts from the New York State College for Teachers at the State University of New York, Albany in 1956. Soon thereafter, Susan met her husband, Carl Allen Dimon, when he visited his high school alma mater, J.C.B. High School in Phoenix, New York, where Susan taught math. They married on July 26, 1958, and moved to Chicago where Carl pursued a Ph.D. in chemical engineering and Susan taught math at Niles Township High School.

After her husband's graduation from Northwestern University in 1962, they moved to Dallas, Texas, where Carl was employed by Mobil Oil. Susan continued her teaching career at Lancaster High School, Lancaster, Texas. In 1963, they bought a house in Lancaster where they raised two children. After the birth of her oldest child, Susan stepped down from teaching in public schools. She continued to contribute to educating young people as a mathtutor. She had an exceptional skill at making algebra and geometry concepts understandable to students of all levels.
When Susan's children were very young, she rekindled her passion for music, studying piano again and becoming a church choir director and vocal soloist at the First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster, Texas, then later at Desoto Presbyterian Church, and at the First Presbyterian Church of Grand Prairie. Susan was also in demand as an accompanist of vocal and instrumental soloists for junior high and high school students. She served as a piano accompanist for high schools in Lancaster, Mesquite, Ovilla, Houston, and San Antonio, Texas, and Sapulpa, Oklahoma. She traveled internationally as an accompanist for high school choirs directed by the family's longtime friend, Mark Sumner.

She later became a private voice teacher and vocal coach. Susan was also an expert seamstress, knitter, and quilter. Many family members and friends cherish the beautiful and intricate garments and quilts she created and lovingly shared. Carl and Susan relocated to Grand Prairie, Texas in 1994. They were married for 59 years at the time of Carl's passing on April 29, 2018. Later that year, Susan moved to Phoenix, Arizona to live close to her daughter Elise and Elise's family. Still, she yearned for her homes in Texas and New York. Susan was very fond of her canine companions, famously Scottish Terriers and a little beagle mix, and later in life, cats, with her cat, Olivia, providing comfort and companionship in her final years.

Susan lived a long and rich life and was beloved by her family and her vast circle of friends, including her many students. Susan is preceded in death by her father, Harry James Garrett and her mother, Alice  Waite Garrett; her husband, Carl Allen Dimon; and her only sibling, Harry James Garrett, Jr. Susan is survived by her daughter, Elise Wise and husband Greg; her son, Stewart Dimon and wife Jamie; grandchildren Madison
Dimon Moore, Catherine Wise, and Brennen Wise; and great grandchildren Mason and Maddox Moore.
