The family of John James Scott of Plainville wishes you to remember our father, who passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2007, while in the company of his loving family. He was born nearly 92 years ago on April 22 in Syracuse and lived on Schuyler Street in the Tipperary Hill neighborhood where he attended St. Patrick's High School. As one of six siblings, he worked at several jobs to help support his family. During the depression, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corp building roads through the mountains of Montana and sending his earnings home to his mother. He met our mother, Vera Southworth, at the Avery Tavern (now known as the Blarney Stone), once owned by Vera's father. Shortly after their marriage, family life was interrupted by the need of his country. He served as a Corporal in the Marine Corp in the Pacific during WW II. He was one of the first of our troops to occupy Japan after her surrender. He worked in several occupations where he usually ended up being the jack–of-all-trades and the individual that was relied upon to solve impossible problems. As proud as he was of the products of his labors, his true mission was his dedication to the well-being and education of his children and grandchildren. He never stopped giving of his talents, wealth, and love. Whenever you were in need, Dad (grandpa, uncle John) was there. Besides his talent as a craftsman, he was well read and engaged us in philosophical and theological discussions that helped to form our values. He taught us to think for ourselves, be honest, respect others, always do our best, and to never give up. He taught us attitudes by his example and coached us into learning the skills of masonry, carpentry, and painting. After his retirement as a painter at Upstate Medical Center, he built two houses for his sons and helped remodel many more homes for his family, friends, and neighbors. One of his greatest passions in his later years was making apple cider with his 1868 cider press. He did not want to stop bottling cider until the last apples were covered with snow.

His family includes sons and daughters-in-law, William and Carolyn Scott of Hannibal, John and Katherine Scott of Baldwinsville, Gerald and Gerry Scott of Red Creek, Robert Scott of Hannibal, David Scott of Plainville; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Robert Roth of Meridian, Patricia and Harold Hemler of Cato; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren all of whom love him very much and will always carry his lessons and love with them as they meet life's challenges.

Services: 10:00am Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at St. Patrick's Church, Cato. Burial in Union Hill Cemetery, Cato. Calling hours are 4-8pm Tuesday, March 20, 2007at the Falardeau Funeral Home, 93 Downer St., Baldwinsville.
