Obituary

Jean Strait Damato 96, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2024 with her loving family by her side. Born on January 17, 1928, she was known for her quick wit, deep pride in her family, and a life filled with meaningful contributions to those around her.

Jean was a graduate of Suffern High School and New Paltz State Teachers College. She spent her early career as a first-grade teacher, shaping young minds at Tri-Valley School in Grahamsville, New York, and later at Street School in New City, New York.

During the 1970's and 80's, she channeled her love of books and learning into her work at the Sloatsburg Library, where she served the community with dedication. Her talents extended beyond her professional life; she was an accomplished seamstress, known for her beautiful sewing and knitting, creating cherished items for friends and family alike.

A woman of incredible strength, Jean faced and beat cancer three times, embodying resilience and courage. In her later years, she took on the challenge of archery, competing in the Senior Games and proudly advancing to the Nationals.Jean was predeceased by her husband, Cono Damato Sr.

She is survived by her children: Joe (Lisa) of Hudson, Ohio; Paul (Dorothy) of Rockaway, New Jersey; Cono (Colleen) of Elbridge, New York; and James of Nashville, Tennessee. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: McKenna, Rachel, Michael, Suzy, and Samuel. Her love, strength and humor were with her until the very end, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
