Obituary

James P. Monroe, 90, of Syracuse, passed away Sunday, April 19th. He was born December 23, 1935, to the late William Monroe and Naomi Ayres. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Shirley, of 70 years.

A proud veteran of the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard, Jim served his country with dedication and discipline. During his service, he was also a member of the pistol team, reflecting the focus, steadiness, and commitment that would define much of his life.

In retirement, Jim embraced life with hands-on enthusiasm and an inventive spirit. He was an avid street rod enthusiast who took particular pride in restoring a classic 1931 Model A, a project that showcased both his patience and his remarkable mechanical skill. His talents extended far beyond the garage. He found joy in furniture making and took on numerous home rehabilitation projects, always improving and building with care and precision.

When he wasn't working with tools, Jim could often be found immersed in fiction, especially action-adventure book series that carried him to faraway places and daring exploits. Reading was one of his favorite ways to relax and satisfy his lifelong curiosity.

Jim will be remembered for his steady presence, his skilled hands, and the way he quietly made the world around him better, one project at a time.

He leaves behind family members who will cherish his guidance, humor, and love. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Monroe and husband Brian Moran; son, Tim Monroe and wife Yuka Kurihara; grandchildren, Matthew Oliver, Cali Oliver, Adam Monroe, Tyler Monroe, Brandon Moran, and Devon Moran.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Falardeau Funeral Home, 93 Downer St., Baldwinsville. A funeral service will follow at noon at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
