James B.
McKenna
Mar 22, 1933 — Jul 9, 2026
James B. McKenna Sr., lovingly known as Jim, passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of July 9, 2026, in Syracuse, New York, at the age of 93. His passing marked the end of a two-year struggle with dementia, during which he remained surrounded by the love and care of his Family.
Jim was born on March 22, 1933, in Potsdam, New York, to Harry and Mary McKenna (née Mahoney). From an early age, his Catholic faith played a central role in his life. He began as an altar boy at St. Mary's Church in Potsdam and later served as a lector for many years at St. Mary's and St. Augustine's in Baldwinsville, as well as St. Joseph's in Liverpool and St. Lucy's in Syracuse. His devotion to his faith was a cornerstone of his character and guided him throughout his life.
A dedicated scholar, Jim graduated from Potsdam High School before pursuing higher education at Ithaca College and Syracuse University leading to a career as a Speech Therapist primarily with Jordan Elbridge Central Schools. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a life filled with teaching and inspiring others. Jim had a passion for reading aloud to children, sharing stories that sparked imagination and joy for thousands over the years.
Jim cherished life's simple pleasures: family gatherings filled with laughter, jazz music that stirred the soul, and opportunities to act and sing-expressions of his vibrant personality. Above all else, he valued instilling morals and values in those around him, leaving an enduring legacy of kindness and integrity.
He is survived by Diane McKenna, his beloved wife of 69 years; their children Erin McKenna, Betsy McKenna Schuette, Michael McKenna, and Brian McKenna; his younger siblings Sheila McKenna and Neil McKenna; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews who will forever hold him close in their hearts. Jim was predeceased by his parents Harry and Mary McKenna and his eldest son James B. McKenna Jr., whose memory he carried with him always.
Jim's life was a testament to LOVE-love for family, faith, learning, music, and community. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
