Carolyn Jane Buongiorne, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, passed away on May 27, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on April 30, 1941, in Rome, NY, Carolyn dedicated her life to education, serving as a Physical Education teacher with the Fulton City School District for 31 years. A proud graduate of Rome Free Academy and SUNY Brockport, where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Health and Physical Education, Carolyn inspired countless students not only through her teaching but also as a cheerleading coach for high school football and basketball teams.
After retiring, Carolyn embraced her deep faith and became actively involved in St. Augustine's Church in Baldwinsville, NY. She lovingly referred to her church community as her second family. As a passionate member, she taught various Bible study classes and served as a lector weekly. Her giving spirit and zest for life were contagious, making her a pillar of strength and joy for those who knew her.
An avid traveler, Carolyn cherished the opportunity to experience new cultures and environments alongside family and friends. Her love for nature and animals shone brightly as she dedicated time to animal-focused charities, always welcoming pets into her home. Many cherished memories were made at Beaver Lake Nature Center, where Carolyn enjoyed the beauty of the natural world.
Carolyn was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Eleanor McCale.
Carolyn is survived by her loving sons, Mike and Paul Buongiorne; her brother, Richard McCale, and sister Jan O'Neil. She leaves behind an adoring family of grandchildren: Shane Short, Eric Short, Jessica Souza, Bradley Buongiorne, Jonathan Buongiorne, and Jennifer Buongiorne, as well as great-grandchildren Blake Buongiorne, Colton Durrell, Jayden Buongiorne, Michael Souza, and Spencer Short. Her impact on their lives will forever be felt.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Carolyn's life on Wednesday, June 4, at 10 a.m. in St. Augustine's Church, 7333 O'Brien Rd., Baldwinsville with burial to follow at 1500 Jervis Ave., Rome, NY. Together, they will remember her vibrant spirit, unwavering kindness, and the countless lives she touched throughout her remarkable journey.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to, Beaver Lake or the Mission Wolf.
