Obituary

Adrian (AKA Adriaan) C. H. Van Maarseveen, 86, of Baldwinsville, passed away on December 15, 2025 after a long series of illnesses. Born in Sungei-Gerong, South Sumatra, Indonesia, December 9, 1939, he was the second child and only son of Bernardus and Jenny (née Sapardan) Van Maarseveen.

Adrian grew up during turbulent times. When he was two, the Second World War began. His father was called into service and captured by the Japanese. As a prisoner, his father worked on the Burma Railway, and was reunited with his family more than a year after the war ended. The end of Dutch colonial rule led to political instability in Indonesia, so in the early 1950's Adrian and his family moved to the Netherlands. The family then found safe haven in the United States in 1962, after immigration laws began to admit more non-Europeans. The family's move was sponsored by Gordon and Shirley (née Faber) Kuipers and the Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Paterson, New Jersey. Adrian was a lifelong Christian and a proud and loyal American citizen.

In 1966, Adrian received a bachelor's degree from the Newark College of Engineering (now the New Jersey Institute of Technology) where he was a member of the Judo team. He received his master's degree from Northeastern University.

Adrian's career as a mechanical engineer led to work at many companies including Bay State Abrasives, General Dynamics, Exxon, Griffin Environmental, and Corning Glassware. After retirement he taught part time at OCM Boces. A person who liked to stay busy, Adrian enjoyed traveling, dancing, playing the guitar, and volleyball. He was also PADI certified to scuba dive, a Notary Public, and qualified as a Code Enforcement Officer.

In the 1980's, Adrian survived a small plane crash-landing that left him and the pilot stranded in a Central New York farmer's field, and put his signature mustache in the news. Well ahead of Tom Selleck, he carefully maintained the distinctive shape of his facial hair for over 50 years.

Adrian will be fondly remembered for his outgoing personality, his warm and welcoming smile to friends and strangers alike, his unique sense of humor, his loving devotion to family including his tireless work to keep track of far-flung kin, and, of course, his mustache.

Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Nancy; children, Bernard (Jen) of Long Island City, NY, Michael of Syracuse, Nyree Van Maarseveen of San Diego, Christopher (Jini) of Brooklyn, NY, Linda (Steve) Earle of Baldwinsville, and Christopher (Duane Rutledge) Congdon of Palm Springs, CA; two sisters, Marsina Nelson of Houston, TX and Catarina (Roger) Timermanis of Grand Rapids, MI; his first wife, Susan van Maarseveen (née Faber); four grandchildren, Alexis and Brett Earle, Kees Van Maarseveen and Willem Van Maarseveen; and four Great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026 from 11 am to 1 pm at the Falardeau Funeral Home, 93 Downer St., Baldwinsville. A service will follow at 1 pm at the funeral home with Pastor Carl Chapman, of the Community Wesleyan Church, providing the service. A luncheon will follow at the Community Wesleyan Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Community Wesleyan Church (https://www.communitywesleyanchurch.com/) at 112 Downer Street, Baldwinsville, NY 13027.
